There is no doubt vaping looks cool. A teenager sucking on a vape has an air of rebellion around him. He knows the risks and doesn’t care. His identity is tied into this rebel attitude.
Big tobacco companies pay millions of dollars each year to advertise their product. Movies, TV and computer games are filled with people smoking and vaping. This is called ‘product placement’ and they do it very covertly, so you almost don’t notice.
They have now moved to trying to get teenagers like you hooked on nicotine vapes. They make the colours pop and the flavours taste nice. Like strawberry raspberry cherry ice.
There is a myth out there that vaping is safe because you are sucking on an invisible water mist.
Wrong
The vapour you are inhaling into your lungs is not just water vapour. It carries ultra-fine particles of heavy metals, such as nickel, lead, and chromium deep into your lung tissue. This causes inflammation, irritation and can cause scarring of the lung tissue.
Reasons to vape:
- It looks cool.
- Once you are addicted to nicotine the ritual of vaping can relieve stress and anxiety. Unfortunately, this turns into a loop as the lack of nicotine is causing the anxiety.
- It gives you an excuse to escape from your job. ‘Just taking a smoke break’.
- It gives you an opportunity to speak to girls. ‘Hey, what flavour is yours?’.
Reasons not to vape:
- Vapes damage your body. Your lungs, heart and mouth.
- It increases your anxiety. When you haven’t vaped for a couple of hours your anxiety peaks.
- They are expensive and keep you poor. You could spend that $2000 a year saving for a car or buying a new phone.
- It hurts your sporting ability. Your lung capacity (energy) is diminished by vaping.
- Late night vaping ruins your sleep, leaving you exhausted the next day.
- You are letting big tobacco control your life. You are making them rich.
Luckily the body can regenerate damaged cells so if you quit your body can heal itself over time.
Don’t let big Tabacco win. If you vape, they take your money and your health. If you want to give the middle finger to something, send it the way of big tobacco and take control of your own health.
